Get answers to common questions about mold and our remediation process

What is Mold?

Mold is a type of fungus that exists naturally in the environment. It reproduces by releasing microscopic spores into the air — spores so small that thousands can fit on a pinhead. While mold plays an important role in nature by breaking down organic matter, it becomes a serious problem when it grows indoors.

Mold thrives wherever moisture is present: leaky roofs, damp basements, condensation on windows, flooding, or even everyday humidity from cooking and bathing. In Alaska's climate — with long winters, temperature extremes, and tightly sealed homes — moisture can easily become trapped indoors, creating ideal conditions for mold growth.

Why is Mold Dangerous?

Health Effects:
  • Respiratory issues — Coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath, and worsening asthma symptoms
  • Allergic reactions — Sneezing, runny nose, red eyes, and skin rashes
  • Chronic sinus infections — Prolonged exposure can lead to recurring infections
  • Immune system stress — Those with weakened immune systems, infants, and the elderly are especially vulnerable
  • Toxic exposure — Some molds (like Stachybotrys, often called "black mold") produce mycotoxins that can cause neurological symptoms, fatigue, and more severe health effects with prolonged exposure
Property Damage:
  • Mold breaks down organic materials like wood, drywall, and insulation
  • Left untreated, it can compromise structural integrity
  • Mold damage significantly decreases property value and can make homes difficult to sell
  • Remediation costs increase dramatically the longer mold is left unaddressed

How is dry fog different from traditional mold remediation?

Traditional mold remediation requires:

  • Demolition of affected materials (drywall, flooring, etc.)
  • Removal and disposal of contaminated materials
  • Reconstruction and repainting
  • Weeks of disruption and temporary relocation
  • Costs often exceeding $10,000-$30,000

Our dry fog technology:

  • Requires little to no demolition
  • Completes treatment in 4-6 hours
  • Treats entire structure including hidden areas
  • Costs a fraction of traditional methods
  • You can return home the same day

Is the dry fog treatment safe?

Yes! Our dry fog solution is EPA-registered and safe for use around people and pets once the treatment is complete and the property has been properly ventilated (typically 2-4 hours). The solution breaks down into harmless components and leaves no toxic residue. We follow all safety protocols and provide clear instructions for re-entry.

How long does the treatment take?

The dry fog application itself takes 4-6 hours depending on the size of your property. You'll need to vacate during treatment and for 2-4 hours afterward for ventilation. Most clients complete the entire process in a single day and can return home that evening. Compare this to traditional remediation which can take weeks!

Will mold come back after treatment?

Our treatment eliminates existing mold with 99.9% effectiveness. However, mold requires moisture to grow. If the moisture source isn't addressed, mold can return. That's why we always identify and help you fix moisture problems before treatment. With proper moisture control, mold should not return.

Do I need to test for mold before treatment?

Not always. If you can see visible mold or smell musty odors, you likely have a mold problem that needs treatment. However, testing can be helpful to:

  • Identify the type of mold present
  • Determine the extent of contamination
  • Verify successful remediation afterward
  • Provide documentation for real estate transactions

We offer comprehensive testing services and will recommend testing when appropriate.

How much does mold remediation cost?

Every property is different, so we provide free estimates based on your specific situation. Our dry fog remediation is typically 50-75% less expensive than traditional methods because there's no demolition or reconstruction. For comparison:

  • Traditional remediation: $10,000-$30,000+
  • Our dry fog treatment: Significantly less (contact for quote)

Plus, you save on hotel costs, storage fees, and the lost time from traditional methods. Contact us for a free, no-obligation estimate.

Does insurance cover mold remediation?

It depends on your policy and the cause of the mold. Insurance typically covers mold remediation if it resulted from a covered event (like a burst pipe). However, mold from long-term moisture problems or neglect is usually not covered. We recommend:

  • Reviewing your policy for mold coverage
  • Contacting your insurance company to discuss your situation
  • Documenting everything with photos and reports

We provide detailed documentation and can work with your insurance company if your claim is approved.

Why is mold common in Alaska?

Alaska's unique climate creates perfect conditions for mold growth:

  • High humidity: Summer humidity and rain create moisture
  • Temperature fluctuations: Heating systems in winter can create condensation
  • Ice dams: Snow and ice can cause water intrusion
  • Tight construction: Energy-efficient homes can trap moisture
  • Limited sunlight: Longer winters mean less natural drying

As Alaskans ourselves, we understand these challenges and how to address them effectively.

Do you serve my area?

We're based in Palmer but serve all of Alaska! Our primary service areas include Palmer, Wasilla, Anchorage, Eagle River, and Fairbanks, but we travel throughout the state to help Alaskans with mold problems. Contact us to confirm service availability in your specific location.

Can I stay in my home during treatment?

No, you'll need to vacate your home during the dry fog application and for 2-4 hours afterward while the property ventilates. Pets should also be removed. However, you can typically return home the same day - usually within 6-8 hours total. This is much shorter than traditional remediation which may require you to leave for days or weeks.

What should I do if I suspect mold?

If you suspect mold in your home:

  1. Don't panic - Mold is common and treatable
  2. Don't disturb it - This can spread spores
  3. Address any active water leaks immediately
  4. Contact us for a free inspection
  5. Keep the area dry and well-ventilated if possible

The sooner you address mold, the easier and less expensive it is to treat. Don't wait!
